Growing up, Joshua Lattao said he always felt split between his queer and Filipino American identities. Until coming to college and finding a supportive community, he believed he had to choose and present himself as either one or the other.

Immigrating to the U.S. from Mexico at age six, Marissa, an international relations and global studies freshman, spent her childhood in a border town where many surrounding adults worked as Border Patrol officers. Walking through the halls of her high school, Marissa, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she never felt completely comfortable with her undocumented status.

The Gender and Sexuality Center’s Lotus Project held a Black and Asian Solidarity Event at the William C. Powers Center on April 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. The discussion consisted of four panelists of both Black and Asian descent: Priscilla Hale, Anî La’arni Ayuma, Michael Cordova and Seina Sleep. During the event, the panelists discussed what solidarity between Black and Asian communities looks like, confronting anti-blackness and xenophobia, and how people can make solidarity part of their daily practices.

Campus Events and Entertainment’s Asian American Culture and Distinguished Speakers committees held their annual event, “InspirAsian 2022: Listen up” last Friday. The event celebrated Asian and Asian American voices in mainstream media, featuring an audience Q&A with headliner and Asian American Youtuber Tim Chantarangsu, previously known as Timothy DeLaGhetto.

Growing up in Monterrey, Mexico during the 2010s, when the government embarked on an extreme crackdown on drug trafficking, Colunga felt violence was normalized for her at an early age.

“Terrible Children,” one of 11 featured films at the 14th annual Austin Asian American Film Festival, tells the story of a daughter uncovering the challenges of her Indian father’s past, from growing up during Partition, immigrating to the U.S. and being cut off from her family for marrying a Danish woman.

“Liquor Store Dreams,” the centerpiece film of the 14th annual Austin Asian American Film Festival, hit the AFS Cinema silver screen on June 25. The documentary, directed and produced by So Yun Um, features the lives of Um and other Korean American children of Los Angeles liquor store owners, exploring themes of Asian and Black tensions and generational divides.
